A legend states that a city called Sybar existed near this site at the time of the Trojan War. Sybar was supposed to be founded by an early Italian tribe called the Messapi. Later, the city was taken over by the Romans, who renamed the city Lupiae, after the Lpyges who originally inhabited the city.
