Barreiras is a town in the east of Brazil in Bahia state. Most of the economy is based on livestock and agriculture, but it has recently experienced an economic boom and so is currently expanding rapidly. The town lies in the Rio Grande Basin, with the river then flowing off to the north east to the São Francisco River. The origins of the town are unknown, with no documented records of the first settlers in the location.

Despite the mystery of who founded the town, there are plenty of natural sights to see in and around Barreiras.
