Trapani is a small city on Sicily’s west coast. The first people to settle in the region were the Elmyrians, who used the colony as a port for their nearby town, Erice. Today, fishing and canning are still key industries for Trapani, and it further serves as a port for ferries to the nearby Egadi Islands. The main cultural events o Trapani occurs around Holy Week. On Good Friday, a religious procession is held thorough the city. The wood, canvas and glue sculptures in the procession date to the 1600s and depict the scenes leading up to the crucifixion. This is one of the oldest, ongoing processions of its nature in Europe.
