Kitzbuehel is located on the Kitzbuhler Ache River in the western part of Austria in the Kitzbuhel Alps. Its location in the Alps makes Kitzbuehel a prime spot for winter sports. The Hahnenkamm Mountain is located in the Kitzbuehel Alps and is home to the yearly World Cup ski races. The area around and including Kitzbuehel is one of the largest ski resort areas in Austria. It is a popular destination for celebrities and high end travelers.

The town itself is small, with a population of just over 8,000, and the earliest known inhabitants dating back to about 1000 BC. Its long history includes being under Roman rule and Bavarian ownership. Today visitors enjoy the sights of the town that include St. Catherine’s Church, built in the 14th century and a museum dedicated to the history of the town.
