Belém is a city in the Brazilian state of Pará in the north of the country. It lies at the entrance to the Amazon River and is a busy transport hub with a port, airport and bus station. Although it has a port, Belém lies around 100km up the Pará River, part of the much larger Amazon River System. The city was founded in 1616, but it did not become a Brazilian city until 1775. There are two distinct areas of Belém, the new and modern sector with skyscrapers and the old colonial sector with pretty tree-filled squares bordered by churches featuring traditional blue tiles.
