Campinus is a city in the south east of the country in the state of São Paulo. The city is the home of one of the most prestigious universities in Latin America, the University of Campinas. The name of the town means 'fields of grass’ in Portuguese and refers to the landscape that originally surrounded the area, which was low level vegetation covering the rolling hills. The city has also been known as the 'City of Swallows’ in the past, but after the buildings they roosted in were torn down they all but disappeared completely.

Notable areas within the city include the Bosque dos Jequitibás, which is an area of woodland which has been preserved and gives a good idea of what the original rainforest would have looked like. You can also visit the Central Market.
