Civitavecchia is a coastal town in the Rome Province in the Lazio region of Italy. It is located in the centre of the country on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is only 80 km to the north west of Rome on the other side of the Mignone River. This city port has a harbour formed of a breakwater, featuring a lighthouse, and two piers. The name of the town means 'ancient town’ and it has history back to the Etruscan era. Within the town is the enormous Forte Michelangelo, which was commissioned by Pope Julius the Second in order to help to defend Rome’s port. The walls are incredibly thick, and are over seven and a half metres in places. There are also the Terme Taurine baths, which were popular in Roman times and are still popular today.
