Macerata is a small city in the March region of Central Italy; the original city was situated on a hill, in between two rivers the Chianti and Potenza. When Rome took over, they renamed the town Retina. After the fall of Rome, invading tribes ransacked Recien and the survivors fled to the nearby hills where they rebuilt. The old town became Macerata, and it is connected with the more modern city by an elevator lift.
The city is known for its two story arcades, located in the centre of the town. A major opera festival in another important tourist draws for Macerata. You can take a short trip to the city’s north to see the ruins of the original Recina settlement too.
