Tradition holds that the city’s name comes from the Messapi tribe who inhabited the region prior to the roman conquest. The Messapi called the area Mesania or Metania, referring to its position halfway between two important local cities. Like most of Italic cities, this one had a tumultuous history, being conquered by a series of different invaders such as the Carthagians, Rome and Byzantium.
