Translating into Red Earth, Terre Rouge is one of few Mauritian towns that has been built away from the sea and coastal areas. There are good facilities catering to domestic national visitors as well as international tourists. It is a short distance to the international airport.

A wonderful hotel in Terre Rouge is the Port Chambly Hotel, which blends the influences and feelings from Moroccan souks and bazaars, Venetian canals and waterways and traditional Mauritian grandeur. Keeping with the name of the town, the hotel is coloured in earthy tones. The Rivulet Terre Rouge Estuary Bird Sanctuary makes for an interesting visit, as does a local rum distillery. Eureka Creole House is a lovely old house with several enclosed facilities. A nature park is an easy drive away, and there are several local restaurants.
