Located in South Yorkshire, Barnsley sits on the River Dearne and is near to the major cities of Sheffield, Leeds and Doncaster. Historically a major industrial town, Barnsley retains several of its original factories. The local culture is firmly rooted in this heritage. Coal mining and glassmaking were particularly large local industries.
Now, many large chain stores operate in the town centre. Barnsley F.C. is a fairly well known football club. Barnsley does not offer much by the way of tourist attractions, although there are some local landmarks worth a look if you are in the area. These include Barnsley Town Hall, the Alhambra Centre, the Cannon Hall Museum, Locke Park, Wetworth Castle, Pot House Hamlet, John Ridal House, Houndhill, museums, theatres, and smaller churches. The film adaption of “Kes” was filmed in several villages around Barnsley.
