Bedford is the county town of Bedfordshire, in the east of England and easily accessible to the country’s capital city of London. The name Bedford is thought to have come from the name of a Saxon chief, Beda. Historically, Bedford was a market town. Unfortunately, only a mound remains of the former castle. The Pilgrim’s Progress was written by John Bunyan when he spent 12 years incarcerated in Bedford Gaol. In the town centre, The Great Ouse River is lined with gardens called The Embankment. There is a war memorial, St Paul’s Church, with a glorious towering spire, two ancient monoliths and various public parks.
