Key West is an island in the Florida States, towards the south of the Florida Keys. It is about 13 square kilometres in area and is a popular place to see when exploring the fabulous Florida Keys. Its original Spanish name was Cayo Hueso, meaning Bone Island, because the island is reported to have, at one time, been covered with the remains from a Native American graveyard or battle site. To the east are several large salt ponds.
It is well connected by road to the Florida mainland, meaning that you can easily access it with a rental car. Famous landmarks include Sloppy Joe’s Bar, the Silver Stripper dance hall and the Ernest Hemingway House, where the famous author is said to have worked on several of his pieces. Another famous literary figure to have enjoyed Key West was Tennessee Williams. The historic old town is popular with tourists.
