Established on 1st March 1872, Yellowstone National Park is named as World's First National Park. It is a perfect place for vacation and to get in touch with Mother Nature. History

Yellowstone gained its name from Yellowstone River, the water of which is still contained in the park. A surveyor named Ferris prepared a map of the area in 1836. Thereafter, in 1870 and 1871, Washburn-Langford-Doane and Hayden undertook comprehensive surveys of the field and in 1872, it was signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant.

Location

A major area of Yellowstone National Park lies in northwestern Wyoming state of the United States. Other minor areas of the park are in southern Montana and eastern Idaho. Since the area is quite big and spread across 3 states, there are 5 entrances to the park.

  • The northern and western entrances of Yellowstone National Park are located in Montana. If you are coming from this state, you can enter the park either through Gardiner, Cookie City or West Yellowstone which are known as Northern, North Eastern and Western Entrance respectively.

  • The other two entrances are via Jackson and Cody in Wyoming which are situated in the South and East side of the park.

Total area

Yellowstone National Park is spread across 2,219,791 acres of land which is approximately 9000 sq km. It covers 101 km from north to south and around 87 km from east to west. This area is covered 80% by forests, 15% by grassland and 5% by water.

    The temperature ranges from -7°C to -18°C. Snowfall varies from area to area.

  • Spring and Fall:

    The day temperature during this season is between 0°C and 16°C. The temperature falls at night to as low as -20°C.

  • Summer Season:

    During this season, the weather is pretty nice. The temperature ranges between 21°C and 27°C during the day.

  • Biscuit basin

    One of the most iconic places in Yellowstone National Park is Biscuit Basin. It is named so because of formations around the edge of the pools shaped like biscuits, however, an earthquake destroyed them. Located at a 3.5-mile distance from Old Faithful lies this Basin which is a natural geyser.

    Within a 1 minute walk is Sapphire Pool which has a stunning blue color featuring unique hydrothermal characteristics. The deep blue center gradually transitions to shades of green and yellow which then transform into vivid oranges and reds along the outer edges.

    Yellowstone National Park has around 10,000 geysers, hot springs, mud pots and fumaroles which constitute more than half of the world's total geothermal features. Quite popular ones are Mammoth Hot Springs, Grand Prismatic Spring, Norris Geyser Basin, Lower Geyser Basin, Black Sand Basin and Midway Geyser Basin. The closest city to the north entrance is Gardiner which is at a distance of 4.9 miles from the Yellowstone National Park Headquarters. Northeast entrance:

To enter Yellowstone from the northeast direction, you will have to come from Cookie City which lies at a distance of 4 miles. Follow the US-212 W which will lead you to Silver Gate. This entrance has the most wildlife and is at a short distance from Lamar Valley.

West entrance:
