Erechim is a city located in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande doSul. The city was one of the first planned cities to be built in Brazil and the planners used concepts they had seen in cities such as Washington DC and Paris. Although the city is modern, its name is very ancient. It is taken from the ancient inhabitants of the regions who called the place ErechimCaingangue, which means 'small field’ as the settlement there at the time was surrounded by areas of forest.
