Portalegre is a district and municipality of the Alentejo region in Portugal. This city is located close to the border with Spain and served as an important frontier town. It is also known for its distinct strong, spicy red wines along with its strong white wines which are collectively known as Portalegre wines. This city was most prosperous during the renaissance middle ages, and its old town center has beautiful baroque architecture showcasing its former glory days.

Portalegre Castle is the main attraction in the city, and is an imposing building with dark walls, which serve as a nice contrast to the surrounding whitewashed buildings. Igreja do Mosteiro de São Francisco is the oldest building here dating back to the 13th century and another major landmark. Other attractions here are the Monastery of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, and the house museum of José Régio, a famous Portuguese poet.
